Scholars from China Visit Valparaiso Adult Education Learning Center - December 16 2011

Valparaiso, IN – A large group of Valparaiso University Visiting Scholars recently visited the Adult Learning Center in Valparaiso to observe and contribute to the English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. The Visiting Scholars are professors of many disciplines from China visiting for a year and learning from American studies at Valparaiso University (VU).  ESL Teacher Laura Hurson just completed her Masters at VU and met Dr. Yuhua Wang in her Linguistics course.

Dr. Wang is a director of her department in teaching English at the Art and Design Academy in Shanghei.  “We are so happy to be here and were very excited about this program, so we’re very grateful the Adult Learning Center let us sit in,” said Dr. Wang. “I plan to volunteer as a teacher for my remaining months in America to give back to this great program and the community.”

The Valparaiso Adult Learning Center is overseen by the Center of Workforce Innovations and brings basic adult education and GED Prep students together in one classroom with the ESL students. “This is unique to our center and truly creates a mutually beneficial student environment,” commented Center Director Daniella Marcusi-Shreve. “The ESL students learn actual application and conversational abilities while working together with our adult basic education students. The sense of community this brings to students from very different backgrounds is astounding and has seen great success.”

The center has students from Egypt, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Japan, China, and more.  All of these students study together in such way the Learning Center feels engages them and immerses them in the English language. The Visiting Scholars got to observe the ESL students making pizza, talking about their favorite toppings, and sharing experiences.
